The invention concerns a self-locking belt reel designed, in particular, for motor vehicles, the belt reel having a vehicle-sensitive and/or belt-sensitive control system for the locking element which, in a situation when the reel needs to be locked, prevents the reel shaft from turning. The reel also has a spring which acts on the reel shaft, as well as a control device which, when the belt is wound on the reel, defines a release position for the control disc, which rotates with the reel shaft, of the vehicle-sensitive and/or belt-sensitive reel control system and, when the belt is not wound on the reel, prevents the control disc from turning any further, thus locking the reel. The aim of the invention is to simplify the control device for the changeover of the control system. To this end, the invention calls for the control disc (13) to have as the control device pinion toothing (14) with a centrepoint (19) lying at the centre of the axis of rotation of the control disc (13) and for the pinion toothing (14) to be in continuous meshing engagement with the control element (16) which can be moved on the reel between a "rotate" position and a "locked" position, the movement of the control element (16) leading to locking or release of the rotation of the control disc (13).
