PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for coating capable of being used for various uses such as the composition for coating paper having good coating ability even in a high solid concentration and excellent in coated paper characteristics. SOLUTION: This composition for coating comprises 100 pts.wt. pigment containing at least 30wt.% calcium carbonate, 0-10 pts.wt. water soluble high molecular weight compound and 5-50 pts.wt. (based on solid) copolymer latex given below and the solid concentration is >=58wt.%. This copolymer latex is obtained by emulsion polymerizing a monomer comprising (a) 15-60wt.% conjugate diene-based monomer, (b) 30-84.5wt.% ethylene-based unsaturated monomer, (c) 0-30wt.% vinyl cyanide compound monomer and (d) 0.5-10wt.% ethylene-based unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer in the presence of chain transfer agents comprising (A) 5-95wt.% at least one compound selected from terpinolene,α-terpinene,γ-terpinene and dipentene and (B) 95-5wt.% at least one compound selected from an alkylmercaptan, carbon tetrachloride, a xanthogen disulfide and a thiuram disulfide.
