The device includes a rectangular box with two compartments. The lower compartment is filled with a dry electrolyte (14) in which two electrodes are implanted (16,18). An opening (20) is provided in the box wall for collecting water leaked from a distribution pipe. The electrodes are connected to the power supply terminals of an alarm or light indicator. When water penetrates in the box compartment the device generates an electrical current which supplies the alarm or the light thus signalling a leakage.
