The method involves triggering (7,12,19) a spray device (5,8) to deliver a marking substance at a defined time. The marking substance is directed at or deflected towards the culprit or can be applied to the illegally removed objects after a time delay. The substance can give off a strong smell which is not unpleasant. It can contain a chemical based on cinnamon. The time delay can be set so that the culprit is marked during or shortly after the crime. The spray device has a replaceable container (8) in which the marking substance can be stored for long periods.
