The electrical connector has a cable loom plug 1 that is moved into engagement with a base socket 2 with the aid of a mechanical interlock mechanism. The mechanism has an operating lever 6 and a pivot mounted link 7 that has a claw end 23 that is moved into engagement with a stud 26 on the base socket. The actuating lever pivots about a stud 12 and has a follower in a slot 21 in the link. Movement of the lever through an arc causes the vertical movement 17 of the plug. Separation of the connection occurs by lever movement in the opposite direction
