PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To grind the tooth surfaces of all teeth of a gear having a circumferential partial tooth. SOLUTION: A work piece (a gear) 2 is rotatably supported by a C spindle, and also a circular grinding wheel 10, having a rack-like cross section, is arranged advance/ retreat-movably in an X axis direction toward the rotation axis (C-axis) of the gear 2, and also movably in a direction orthogonal to (Y-axis direction) and parallel to (Z-axis direction) the axis of the work piece 2. The work piece 2 and the grinding wheel 10 are engaged at a starting point for engagement on the end part in a tooth width direction of the work piece 2. The work piece 2 is rotated on until the ending point of the engagement of both sides, and also the grinding wheel 10 is rectlinearly moved in the Y axis direction to make generating motion, while synchronizing with this rotation. Next, the grinding wheel 10 is moved by divided quantityΔZ in the tooth leading direction of the work piece 2 to repeat the generating motion. Thus, the generating motion is made by the circular grinding wheel 10, having the rack-like cross section, and the gear 2, having a circumferential portion tooth, to make grinding to the tooth surfaces of all teeth.
