The drilling rig consists of a rotary head (3) which is able to travel along a mast and is equipped with a tool. It has a main mast (1) and a sliding member (2) which can move axially inside it between a retracted position in which the mast is at minimal length and a deployed position giving it maximal length. It has a drive to rotate the head and a mechanism for connecting the head to the sliding member, and the two can be operated by a single motor. The mast has two locks (41, 42) to fix the mast in its retracted and deployed positions, the deployment and retraction being effected by a chain in a continuous loop, passing round a series of sprockets. The rig is mounted on a chassis with crawler tracks and equipped with a hydraulic system.
