The instrument a handle section connected with a shaft (2) at the end of which is a forceps type tool head (4). Within the shaft is a magazine (11) containing the surgical clips (35). The handle operates a closing arrangement for the jaws which runs through the centre of the shaft. A sliding mechanism is also provided for moving the clips to the insertion position. Between the forceps jaws and in the sliding track for the clips, a spring loaded retaining sprocket (17) can engage. When the front most clip is ejected in the insertion position, the sprocket retracts to lie on the rear side of the clips remaining.
