Buried gas-insulated HV power cable for population centres

A gas-insulated cable has at least one high voltage tubular conductor (4) surrounded by a sleeve (3) on support insulators (2) and air at atmospheric pressure filling the space. The whole lot is buried in the ground. The conductor(s) is/are predominantly designed in aluminium sections. The sleeve is also made in conducting sections which are slid together. The sleeve is made from corrugated galvanised steel pipe. At the start and finish of the one conductor is an overvoltage shunt between it and the sleeve or between it and the return conductor. An overvoltage shunt forms part of one of the support insulators.
