The steered road wheels (1) are coupled by track-rods (2) to a hydraulic piston-cylinder unit (3) with two chambers connected (4,5) to an electromagnetically operable proportional valve (6). Pressure in a storage chamber (7) is maintained by pumping (8) through a non-return valve (10) from a reservoir (9). The proportional valve is actuated by a control circuit (14) comparing the signal from a piston position sensor (15) with the output from the set-point device (13) linked to the handwheel (11). The vehicle may be programmed to follow a predetermined track by an autonomous control (200).
