The invention relates to a method for the oxidation of polysaccharides with ozone under the influence of a halogenide-containing catalyst in aqueous medium, wherein, depending on the catalyst and pH, the oxidation can be controlled in the direction of carbonyl or carboxyl groups. The polysaccharides can be selected, inter alia, from starch, cellulose and inulin. The catalyst that is used is a bromine or iodine compound.
