The backrest has two side members (1) with an upper cross member (2). Each side member has front (4) and rear (3) carriers. The rear carrier is positioned within the cross member. The front carrier is mounted above the connecting support (5) and below the cross member and a part of its length is attached to the rear support carrier. Both support carriers are connected together over this area. Both carrier supports can have a section (6,7) which extends laterally at the top, spaced by a set amount. These sections can be rigidly connected by couplings (8).
