Inhibiting bone loss comprises admin. of benzoquinolin-3-one deriv. of formula (I) or its salt. In (I), R and R1 are H; or R+R1 is a bond; R2 is H or 1-3C alkyl; R3 is H, Me or Et; either R4 and X-R5 are absent and R3 is not Et; or (R6)m is absent; and R3 is not H, R4, X-R5 are opt. present at positions 7, 8 or 9; R4 is H, halo, Me or Et; X is 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 2-4C alkynyl, a bond, SO, SO2, COX(CH2)n, YCO(CH2)n, CO, Z(CH2)n or SO3; Y is S, O or NH; Z is O or S; n is 0-3; R5 is e.g. perhalophenyl; phenyl, naphthalenyl, pyridinyl, pyrazinyl etc., (all opt. substd. by 1-3 of halo CF3, 1-4C alkyl, OH, 1-3C alkoxy, NO2 etc.); morpholino(1-3C alkyl); phenyl-(1-3C) alkylpiperidinyl etc.; m is 1 or 2; R6 is e.g. H, halo, NO2, CN, CF3, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, COOH, 1-6C alkoxycarbonyl, amino, mono- or di-(1-4C alkyl)amino, amido etc. |
