The apparatus has a land map information memory (1), e.g. a CD-ROM, a current position detection device e.g. a GPS sensor (6a), a direction sensor (6b) and a distance sensor (6c). Digitised map data e.g. street data and crossing data are stored in the CD-ROM and the GPS along with the distance and direction sensors detects a current position of a mobile unit in the map data stored in the memory. A display unit (8) extracts two adjacent guide target crossings by which a user is to be informed via guide information from crossings on the route in dependence on the stored map data. A control unit (7) sets a path between two points in the map data stored in the CD-ROM. The display unit detects a distance between two guide crossings to provide information via the guide information with respect to the guide crossings when the distance is within a specified value.
