The magnetic rail brake has an excitation coil (6) and a core (7) opening out into two pole-shoes (12a, 12b). The pole-shoes have respectively a braking surface (14a, 14b) making contact with the rail surface (13). At least one frictional mass body of no or weakly magnetic material, is arranged in the gap (11) between the two pole-shoes. The frictional mass body (15) has at least one frictional surface (16), which projects from the gap, at least until the plane of the braking surfaces (14a, 14b) is reached. The material of the frictional mass body is diamagnetic or paramagnetic.
