The system is based on an impact detector with one or more accelerometers (11) wired to a microprocessor (12). A dangerous impact produces an output (A') which is AND-gated (21) with that of a seat occupancy detector (18) comprising a feeler unit (19) and another processor (20). The feeler unit comprises an optical transmitter and receiver mounted under the dashboard and directed into the footwell. When both outputs are present simultaneously the output stage (14) produces a trigger signal (A) for the ignition element (15) of a gas generator which inflates an air bag (17).
