The electric furnace (1), to keep molten metals hot and especially aluminium, has a protective cladding (7) of silicon carbide (SiC) on the surface of the graphite block (5) towards the interior of the furnace (1). The protective cladding (7) is a plate of SiC positioned in front of the surface of the graphite block (5). The protective cladding (7) or plate is bonded to the graphite block surface by a heat-conductive adhesive, as a cold bonding adhesive with a cement base. A stirrer, inserted into the furnace interior, has a graphite rotor and stator. The surfaces in contact with the molten metal are cladded with a protective silicon carbide layer. The base plate and/or side walls, with no heaters embedded into the graphite block, are cladded with graphite plates (8), with a protective coating of silicon carbide on the sides towards the interior of the furnace, or they are cladded with silicon carbide plates.
