The press section of a paper machine has at least one press nip(12) through which the web of paper (26) passes together with at least one felt (20) and at least one press belt (18). On leaving the nip, the belt (18), which has recesses in its surface, travels in a substantially straight line at a small angle to the felt (20) and then passes around at least one "centrifuge" guide roll (28) which has a small enough diameter to cause the water carried in the surface recesses of the belt to be expelled by centrifugal force.
