A gas distributor (7) at the water-immersed (4) end (6) of the pipe (5) has a perforated (11) hollow body (10) or porous frit and causes the gas to flow at right angles to the pipe. The distributor is releasably joined to the pipe and held (12) to the vessel (2). Details include a screw connection (13) for the distributor as well as suction line (8) leading from above water level in the vessel to a mouthpiece (9). In operation, the pipe head (3) has first to be filled with tobacco and this then ignited so that suction at the mouthpiece under-pressurises the vessel part above the water which in turn raises the water level enough (14) to under-pressurise the pipe and distributor and so draw pipe head smoke through into the vessel and mouthpiece. At this stage, the distributor causes the smoke to bubble finely through the water which cleans it thoroughly as a result.
