Latch needles of a circular knitting machine are each above a rockable and slidable jack (4) itself above a selector jack (5) which is only rockable. The rocking jacks (4) which operate the needles are each pivotal about a rocking point (44) between operative and inoperative positions, and are urged into the latter positions by respective cams (34). When a selector jack (5) is rocked by a pattern cam (19) into selected position, against the restoring forceof a magnet (36), it automatically pivots its associated rocking jack (4) into its needle-raising operative position. Pref. each selector jack (5) has a forked end (14) which receives a tail (13) of its associated rocking jack (4).
