PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the production of glucose in good yield by efficiently hydrolyzing vegetable fibers containing cellulose according to a simple method. SOLUTION: Vegetable fibers in an amount about equal to that of silica is added to an aqueous solution of the silica containing the silica powder having 0.5-100μm average particle diameter and the resultant mixture is then stirred and further heated to 80-100 deg.C while being stirred. The prepared mixture is allowed to stand for a prescribed time and the temperature thereof is reduced to about 40 deg.C. A cellulase is subsequently added thereto in this stage to continue the stirring for a prescribed time. The obtained solution is successively passed through a column filled with diatomaceous earth, an active carbon column and an ion exchange resin, filtered, concentrated and then dried.
