PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst, comprising a specific carrier titanium component, having high activities and capable of producing a polyα-olefin having a relatively low stereoregularity. SOLUTION: This catalyst for polymerizing anα-olefin comprises (A) a carrier type titanium component, (B) an organoaluminum compound and (C) an alkoxysilane. The component A is composed of (i) a magnesium halide (e.g. magnesium chloride), (ii) a diester of phthalic acid (e.g. dimethyl phthalate), (iii) a tetravalent titanium compound (e.g. titanium tetrachloride) and (iv) a halide of a group XIII metal of the periodic table (preferably a halide of Al, e.g. aluminum trichloride). In the component A, the components are preferably used at the following ratio: For example, the molar ratio of the component (ii):component (iii) is (0.05:1) to (1:0.05) and the weight ratio of the component (i):component (iii) is about (1:001) to (1:0.1). The weight ratio of the component (iv):component (i) is about (0.01:1) to (0.5:1).
