PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the luminous efficacy and lifetime of a phosphor layer in a PDP. SOLUTION: An uniform coating layer 42 is formed on the surface of a phosphor particle 41, and the thickness of the coating layer 42 is set to satisfyλ(2m+1)/4h (whereλis wavelength of ultraviolet rays generated in a discharge space, n is a refractive index of the coating layer, and m=0, 1, 2, 3). Or, a granular material is adhered to the surface of the phosphor particle 41 in an island state with a clearance enough for ultraviolet rays to pass through. Alternatively, an metal oxide is formed on the surface of the phosphor particle 41 in an island state with a clearance enough for ultraviolet rays to pass through by hydrolysis reaction of an organometal compound.
