PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt having pale color close to white and produce a method for producing the alkyl ester salt. SOLUTION: When anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt is produced from a saturated fatty acid alkyl ester represented by the formula, R1 CH2 COOR2 [R1 is a 6-24C alkyl group; R2 is a 1-6C alkyl group], at least aging process is carried out in the presence of at least one kind of compound selected from a group comprising a phosphoric acid compound, an organic phosphorus compound, an carbonate compound, a boric acid compound, a boron compound, a silicic acid compound and a silicon compound as a coloration suppressant.
