An absorbent article such as a diaper has an outer layer of porous fabric (10) and an inner absorbent core (14). A separator layer (12) of thermally bonded nonwoven fabric is positioned between the outer layer (10) and the core (14) to reduce rewet by liquids. The fibers of the nonwoven fabric of the separator layer (12) have a diameter greater than 28 microns and at least 5 crimps per extended inch, and the fabric has a porosity of about 90-95 % to provide improved rewet properties <IMAGE>
