Magnetic tape drive with head selection function

The tape controller can write and read 2N tracks, where N is a positive integer. The tape drive has multiple magnetic heads having the same width as the tape, and can read and write N tracks on the tape. The controller (9) controls reading and writing operations. The sending head and the return head are aligned with each track on the magnetic tape. The controller selects either the sending head or the receiving head to read information in response to a relation of the output levels of each of the corresponding heads. The selection algorithm takes the head with the higher output.
