The inherent moisture of material flowing out of a storage hopper is measured using an inclined guide plate, incorporated in which is incorporated measuring equipment calibrated to suit the material. The plate(5) is equipped to influence the material flow, and can be immediately adjacent, to the hopper(2). At the discharge end it can have a ram-operated baffle plate moved above the guide-plate, causing the material to accumulate along the latter. On completion of measurement this is lowered, allowing the accumulated material to flow away. Alternatively there can be a transverse barrier on the plate forming an obstruction.
