To shorten the lower thread end at the fabric side, in a sewing machine with a needle (3) and a looper (7), the sewing machine is temporarily stopped when the needle (3) is at the bottom position. The sewing machine operation is resumed for a short period until the thread feed has returned to the top dead centre position.
