The spindle of a machine tool moves the workpiece in a rotary or translatory pattern. The spindle is divided into a tool/acoustic sensor section (13a) and a mounting section (13b). The two parts are acoustically insulated against each other, and are mechanically connected together. The stiff insulation material is of plastics, with a fibre reinforcement, especially of phenol resin.
