PROCESS FOR HYDROPHILICIZING THE SURFACE OF POLYMERIC SUBSTRATES WITH A MACROINITIATOR AS PRIMER

Disclosed is a process for hydrophilicizing a surface of a polymeric substrate by free-radical polymerization of a hydrophilic vinyl monomer, wherein the substrate is treated beforehand with a solution of a macroinitiator having a free-radical-forming group in a side chain. The macroinitiator is preferably a reaction product of a copolymer of a C3-C40 olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid with an alkyl hydroperoxide. If desired, the hydrophilic vinyl monomer may be used together with a crosslinking vinyl monomer which has 2 or more olefinic double bonds and which may additionally contain a hydrophilic group.
