This method processes mixed materials containing e.g. heavy metals or halogenated hydrocarbons. Two or more phases are included, having different boiling points. They are vapourised by heating under vacuum in a treatment chamber (1), with staged increases in temperature. The vapours are extracted, cooled, and condensed as separate phases. In the new design, vapours enter a reaction chamber (8) forming part of the treatment chamber. A reagent gas or gas mixture is supplied to the reaction chamber, independently of the vapourised products. An extraction line is connected to the reaction chamber, to pump away vapourised products and reaction gases. Also claimed is the required apparatus, where the reaction chamber is a smooth tube. One open end extends into the treatment chamber. The other end makes a vacuum-tight penetration through the chamber wall, to be connected to the extraction line.
