PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detecting device capable of being easily after-attached to an existing machine in the detection of rope empty winding condition. SOLUTION: An ultrasonic distance sensor 3 is provided in the position separated from a winch drum 1 and in a position having the angleα< 90 deg. in relation to the axis O of the which drum 1 and from which ultrasonic waves are emitted toward the axis O of the winch drum 1. When a rope 2 is not existing on the winch drum 1, reflected waves of the ultrasonic waves emitted from the ultrasonic distance sensor 3 are not returned, and therefore, the absence of the rope can be confirmed.
