PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compatible magnetic head having improved saturation characteristics by suppressing reduction in recorded magnetization. SOLUTION: This magnetic head 31 has a front core 2 and a back core 5 which are formed such that a product of the saturated magnetic flux density (Bf) of the front core 2 and the minimum cross-sectional area Af thereof is larger than a product of the saturated magnetic flux density (Bb) of the back core 5 and the minimum cross-sectional area Ab thereof and a product of the initial permeability (μf) of the front core 2 and the cross-sectional area Af thereof is larger than a product of the initial permeability (μb) of the back core 5 and the cross-sectional area Ab thereof. Accordingly, since the back core 5 is saturated earlier than the front core 2, reduction in recorded magnetization is prevented from occurring, thereby resulting in improved saturation characteristics. Furthermore, since the saturated magnetic flux densities Bf and Bb respectively have the same values as the conventional ones, it is possible to perform overwriting and achieve compatibility.
