A method of removing a carbonyl compound impurity from an alkyl (alk)acrylate product comprises bringing together the alkyl (alk)acrylate-containing product with an amine or a hydrazine compound such that said amine or hydrazine compound reacts with at least a portion of said carbonyl compound impurity contained in said alkyl (alk)acrylate-containing product to form a reaction product which is substantially non-reactive towards the alkyl (alk)acrylate and is readily separable from the alkyl (alk)acrylate by physical separation means. The method is particularly useful for removing carbonyl compounds from methyl methacrylate made by the reaction of formaldehyde and methanol with methyl propionate. |
