Brake assembly for a vehicle, particularly industrial trucks

A brake body (3,53) is urged to engage a brake rotor (1,51) by a spring (11,61) via a force transmission lever (10,60) for parking braking. An actuator (9,59) acts to reduce the air gap between an electromagnet (12,62) and the lever so that the energized electromagnet generates sufficient force to counteract that of the spring. The actuator can urge the brake body towards the rotor irrespective of whether or not the electromagnet is energized. The actuator, which may be a hydraulic cylinder, is controlled by a suitable control element such as a brake pedal, and the electromagnet is energized via a switch whereby the activation of the electromagnet when the air gap has been suitable reduced by the actuator acts to release the parking brake.
