A ribbon (3) is embedded in the cheese crust (2), with one or both ends protruding from the crust. Crust (2) of a mature cheese has a ribbon (3) embedded around its widest part (21), with one or both ends protruding from the crust. The ribbon can, therefore, be pulled to split the crust and allow it to be peeled away from the cheese. The ribbon is made of nonwoven, non-degradable material and is 5 to 10mm wide.
