PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily construct a network system at low cost when terminals are installed at plural spots at a distance from each other. SOLUTION: This communication equipment is constituted of a basic device 6 provided with a transmission line interface part 11 and a data input/output part 12 and an extension device 8, provided with the transmission line interface part 21 and an exchange part 22. When using the basic device 6 as an independent unit, the data input/output part 12 transmits and receives transmission data via a transmission line 4 via the transmission line interface part 11 and functions as a so-called 'data terminal'. When the extension device 8 is incorporated into the basic device 6, the transmission line interface part 11 and data input/output part 12 of the basic device 6 are connected via the exchange part 22 of the extension device 8, and the transmission data are distributed to the transmission line interface parts 11 and 21 and the data input/output part 12 by the exchange part 22, so that the communication equipment 2 functions as a data terminal and also as an exchange.
