The method, which compacts a sequence of test vectors for detecting faults, a subset of which are choses as target faults, comprises a restoration phase and a segment manipulation phase. The restoration phase identifies segments of vectors, where a segment is a subsequence of vectors, such that a detection time for any future target fault is earlier than a time associated with the vector in the subsequence. Each segment detects one of the target faults. The segment manipulation phase comprises re-ordering, pruning and merging of the segments. Re-ordering is performed for better compaction. During merging, segments are merged into a compact set and compaction is complete when this set detects all faults in the target fault list. During pruning, compaction is done by considering two overlapping segments by retaining the synchronizing sequence of the first of the overlapping segments and pruning the synchronizing sequence from all other segments.
