PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the optimized design of a plate-fin heat exchanger or down-flow reboiler/condenser used for low-temperature services. SOLUTION: A plate-fin heat exchanger or down-flow reboiler/condenser 6 has a plurality of fins having a substantially uniform height of <=0.20 in (5.08 mm) and arranged in a substantially uniform fin density of >=25 in<-1> (9.8425 cm<-1> ) between adjacent separation sheets. Therefore, the fin design of the heat exchanger or down-flow reboiler/condenser 6 can be optimized by using a low fin height, thin fin thickness, and a high fin density, and the efficiency of heat transfer between an evaporating fluid and a condensed fluid, for example, cryogenic liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen can be improved.
