The preparation of a 6-methyl aryl uracil (IIa) is carried out by hydrogenolysis of a 6- alpha -alkyl carboxy methyl aryl uracil (IIb) in an inert solvent in the presence of a base and a catalyst at a temperature between 0 deg C and the boiling point of the mixture. The preparation of a 6-methyl aryl uracil (IIa) is carried out by hydrogenolysis of a 6- alpha -alkyl carboxy methyl aryl uracil (IIb) in an inert solvent in the presence of a base and a catalyst at a temperature between 0 deg C and the boiling point of the mixture.
