The assembly consists of a prosthesis (1), tubular or bifurcated in shape, which is capable of expansion after insertion into the anatomical duct and is held in place at its proximal end (1a) by a collar (29). The collar is made in the form of a split metal ring which is capable of radial deformation at least locally so that it can be fitted round the outer surface of the duct and cooperate with a reinforcing ring (150) on the end of the prosthesis inside it. In a variant of the design the collar can be in the form of a double open ring, with the inner ring fitting between the two outer rings, and the inner ring can have an abrasive or non-slip surface. The outer collar can be made from a springy plastics or metal such a stainless steel, especially Phynol(RTM) or a metal with a shape memory such as Nitinol (RTM).
