PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium which does not cause winding troubles even for repeated use and which has excellent durability without causing dropout in the output by damages on the edges. SOLUTION: In this coating type magnetic tape, carbon black is used as a component of the back layer coating material to be applied on the opposite surface to the magnetic layer. The coating material is prepared by kneading and controlling its dispersion degree so that the surface of the back layer has >=0.04μm and <=0.06μm arithmetic average roughness (Ra) and >=0.05μm and <=0.07μm ten-point average roughness (Rz).
