PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lean burn internal combustion engine which can appropriately hold an air-fuel ratio while effectively attribution evapotranspirated fuel gas to combustion during rich air-fuel ratio operation, and prevent deterioration in fuel consumption performance. SOLUTION: This lean burn internal combustion engine has an occulusion type NOx catalyst. When deterioration of exhaust emission controlling performance of the occulusion type NOx catalyst is determined (S10), evapotranspirated fuel gas generated in a fuel tank is introduced into an intake passage by the evapotranspirated fuel gas introduction means (S12). At this time, a fuel injection amount is corrected by the amount according to the introduced evapotranspirated fuel gas.
