The hybrid drive (10) has the internal combustion engine, the electric motor and the battery charging alternator coupled by an epicyclic gear train (30). An electronic module (14) controls the coupling, and also controls operation of a brake which is applied to immobilize the rotation of the alternator shaft (40) when it is not charging the battery.
