PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having stable and excellent oxygen carrying ability, useful as a more stable oxygen carrier and useful also as a gas absorbent, or the like., by introducing an imidazole derivative which functions as a substituent group, e.g. an axial base to the second position of tetranaphthylporphyrin metal complex. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I or II [R1 and R2 are each an organic group; M is a transition metal ion of fourth or fifth cycle; X- is a halogen ion and number of X- is a number obtained by deducting 2 from the valence of the metal ion] or its metal complex, e.g. 2-[8-(N-imidazole) octanoyloxymethyl]-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(α,α,α,α-o-pivaloyloxynaphthyl)porphyrin. The compound of formula I is obtained by starting from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(α,α,α,α-o-hydroxynaphthyl)porphyrin and passing through a 2- hydroxymethyl-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(α,α,α,α-o-2,2-dimethylalkanoyloxynaphthyl) porphyrin.
