PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coloring matter stably maintaining its color-developed state during storage, while getting immediately colorless when subjected to solution treatment, therefore useful for the residual color reduction after treating silver halide photographic photosensitive materials. SOLUTION: This coloring matter is represented by formula I (R1 is an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic ring; R2 and R3 are each H, an alkyl, aryl or the like; L1 and L2 are each methine or N; L3 and L4 are each methine; Z is an atom group needing to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring; (m) is 0 or 1; Y is O, S, Se or the like; V is a univalent group; (p) is 0 or 1-3; X is a counterion; (n) is the number of >=0 needing to neutralize the electric charge in the molecule), e.g. a coloring matter of formula II. This coloring matter of formula I is obtained through such reactions as to mix 2-ethyl benzothiazole with ethyl p-toluenesulfonate followed by melting the mixture under heating to form a compound which, in turn, is dissolved, together with 4- diethylaminosalicylaldehyde, in ethanol followed by adding piperidine to the resulting solution and then refluxing under heating.
