MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the mechanical strength and surface smoothness of coating films in a multilayer magnetic recording medium and to obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic underlayer 2 consisting essentially of nonmagnetic particles and a binder and a magnetic recording layer 3 laminated in this order on a nonmagnetic substrate 1. The nonmagnetic particles are made of iron oxide hydrate and have 0.25-0.35μm average major axis length and an average aspect ratio of 15-30. The surface of the iron oxide hydrate particles is preferably treated with an organic compound having terminal carboxyl groups.
