PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a BTN liquid crystal device which is usable in a wide range of temperature regions by using liquid crystals having the dielectric anisotropy with which the driving margin of the liquid crystal device dependent up the value of the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystals attains the value near the maximum value. SOLUTION: The patterns of transparent electrodes 4A and 4B are formed on a glass substrate 5 and respective polyimide alignment layers 2 are applied thereon. A liquid crystal panel is then constituted. The pretilt anglesθ1,θ2 of liquid crystal molecules of this liquid crystal panel attain several degrees and the initial alignment attains a twist state ofπrad. This liquid crystal panel is held by two polarizers 7 varying in the directions of polarization, by which the BTN liquid crystal device is constituted. The driving margin of the liquid crystal device depends upon the value of the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal and the liquid crystals having the dielectric anisotropy at which the driving margin attains the value near the maximum value are selected. As a result, the display which is widen in the driving margin in spite of the lower temperature and does not generate fingerprints is obtained.
