PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain smoke from generating in switching to first combustion and second combustion, and vice versa. SOLUTION: First combustion where the EGR gas amount in a combustion chamber 5 is more than the EGR gas amount with the peak generation of soot and thus generates little soot and second combustion where the EGR gas amount in the combustion chamber 5 is less than the EGR gas amount with the peak generation of soot are selectively performed. Switching from the first combustion to the second combustion is performed from the cylinder having the highest air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5, and switching from the second combustion to the first combustion is performed from the cylinder having the lowest air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5.
