PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound of an intermediate useful for producing an alkoxy-triazolone or-triazolethione herbicidal compound which can be used as a defoliant, a drying agent, a disrupting agent against broadleaf trees and especially a herbicide. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R2 is methyl, ethyl, n-, i- or cyclo- propyl, or n-, i-, s- or t-butyl; R3 is methyl, ethyl, nor i-propyl, n-, i-, s- or t-butyl, or the like; Y is O) (5-methoxy-4-methyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one is excluded), for example, 4-methyl-5-methoxy-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one. A compound of formula I ca be obtained, for example, by reacting a hydrazinoformic acid ester of the formula: H2NNHCOOR4 (R4 is an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl) with an alkyliminocarboxylic acid diester of formula II.
